Normalcy Returns in Shopian after 22 days

SHOPIAN; 29, Sep 2013: Normal life resumed today in south Kashmir’s Shopian town after 22 days. All the shops, schools, petrol pumps and other business establishments resumed their work.

Pertinently 5 people were killed in Gagren area of the town earlier this month. Following which authorities imposed curfew that continued for next 15 days and was lifted on 22nd of September. Since then a strike was being observed demanding punishment to the killers and removal of the CRPF camp. Govt. earlier ordered for shifting of camp. But locals decided to continue with strike until camp will be removed completely.

Yesterday a general meeting was held where in it was decided to resume normal business from today, however a deadline was set to government upto Oct 10 to remove the camp. Meanwhile residents of Gagren area threatened that in case the camp will not be removed until 10th Oct, they will migrate to other places.

Life resumed today morning and most of the shopkeepers were busy in cleaning their shops. A local trader Javid Ahmad said, “Due to the continuous shutdown for more than three weeks, the shutter of my shop was blocked and it took me more than half a day to restore it.”

Similarly another shopkeeper Sajad Ahmad said, “Rats destroyed more than half of goods that were present in my shop during the past days.”

Although an effect of Sunday was seen in the market but still it was a busy day for all shopkeepers, transporters and others.
