Old City Shuts against Fresh Arrest Spree

SRINAGAR; 19, Sep 2013: Parts of Old city Srinagar including Nowhatta and Khanyar observes a shutdown against the arrest of youth by the police.

Reports of protests were also received from a few areas.

Among the detained, one Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Saidpora has been arrested on charges of stone-pelting.

17 year old Mushtaq, brother of seven sisters, works as a bus conductor, was whisked away by police yesterday morning at 11:00 AM.

His mother and seven sisters are out on streets demanding his release. He is currently lodged in Nowhatta police station.

His family alleges that he was picked on behest of a "police informer". They accused police of "torturing" and "forcing" Mushtaq to accept the stone-throwing charges.
