Cop Tortured to Death: Family
BARAMULLA; 02, Oct 2013: A policeman, who was found dead in Bemina area of uptown Srinagar in July this year, was tortured to death and had not died in a road accident as claimed by the police, his family says.
On July 27, body of Constable Mohammad Hussain of Walraman village of Kandi Baramulla was recovered by police from Bemina area of the city. Police had termed Hussain’s death as a case of hit and run. However, the family refute the police version.
“At Pantha Chowk, the body of my son was handed over to me. Police told me that he was knocked down by an unknown vehicle which had fled later. However, after carefully examining the body, I found torture marks on it,” Hussain’s father, Mohammad Sultan Wani, told a local daily Wednesday.
A day after his son’s death, Wani said, he visited police station Bemina to seek more details about the cause of his son’s death. There, the SHO, he said, told him that Hussain’s body was recovered along the roadside under mysterious circumstances following which police had filed a hit and run case.
“I don’t believe it was a hit and run case. My son was surely tortured before death,” Wani said.
He said even if the police claims were true, “why have they (police) failed to get to the culprits who killed one of their own men?”
“We have the lost hope for justice. If police could not do justice with their men, what can common masses expect,” he said, adding “We’ll stage protests against the police department if they don’t identify and punish the culprits.”
Investigating Officer Mumtaz Ahmad told that Hussain was hit by an unknown vehicle on the highway and the driver had fled away from the spot.
“There is no witness to the accident. No one has seen the driver or noted down the number of the vehicle. However, we’re trying to solve the case,” he added.
