Crackdown Returns in Kulgam
KULGAM; 02, Oct 2013: In a throwback to ’90s, Army, SOG and paramilitary CRPF on Wednesday cracked down on hamlets of Gofebal and Gretebal in South Kashmir’s Kulgam town and forced people to come out from their bed and assemble in a nearby ground. Locals told a news agency that around 4 am large contingent of Special Operation Group, 9 RR and 18 Battalion CRPF arrived in the Gofebal and Gretebal hamlets of Kulgam and sealed KulgamIslamabad road.
“It was exactly 4 am when I heard an announcement asking people to come out from their houses as the government Forces has cordoned off the area. When I came out, I saw Army, SOG and CRPF personnel present outside who were directing people to reach quickly in the nearby ground,” one of the residents of Gofebal told a news agency.
Whole population of these two hamlets were gathered in a ground and their identity cards were thoroughly checked. Forces launched massive searches and entered each and every house of these two villages. During the crackdown, the women flock stayed together while the troopers searched the house thoroughly.
When contacted Defense spokesperson told a news agency that he does not know anything about the operation. Sources said that these hamlets were cracked down after the Army received information about the presence of militants there. The crackdown continued till afternoon after that transport was allowed to ply on Kulgam-Islamabad road.
