Fresh Snowfall in Kashmir, National Highway Closed

SRINAGAR; As forecasted by MeT Department, Kashmir Valley Wednesday received fresh bout of snowfall as temperature in the summer capital Srinagar dipped to Zero degrees Celsius.
 
"Light snowfall was recorded at many places in Kashmir Valley including in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Kokernag, Kulgam and Kupwara," a MET department official told adding that reports of fresh snowfall has been received from other parts of Kashmir Valley.


He said the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg received around 4 inch of snowfall, while Srinagar recorded 0.3 cm of snow.
 
The MET official further said that there will be respite from cold in coming days during day time, however, the temperature may dip further during nights.
 
Due to fresh snowfall, the authorities closed Srinagar-Jammu Highway and did not permit Jammu bound vehicles to cross the tunnel. However, the stranded vehicles were allowed to move towards Srinagar.  
 
Pertinently, on New Year's eve normal life was disrupted all across Kashmir due to heavy snowfall. Reports said that South Kashmir received a major snowfall. Residents of Qazigund staged a protest against the non-availability of electricity and drinking water. Fresh snowfall has also led to the water-logging in different parts of Kashmir including Srinagar city.

The MeT department had forecasted a heavy snowfall in valley and Ladakh regions starting from today till 10th of Jan.
