Women Helpline to be Launched Today
SRINAGAR: The police here will on Saturday launch a helpline number to help women in distress. This comes a year after the horrific acid attack on a 28-year-old teacher by a youth here.
“The women’s helpline will be launched by police in Srinagar on Saturday,” SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar said. The 24x7 helpline numbers would be 942477567/ 9596222550/51. The policemen and officers would be continuously monitoring the grievances and complaints received through the helpline from women and girls.
The helpline would be under the supervision of SSP Srinagar. “It was formed to give women easy access to lodge their complaints with the police, “ the officer said.
Any woman who faces domestic violence, sexual harassment, eve teasing or any kind of other harassment, can dial the helpline and seek police help.
The official said the girls should report every stalking and teasing incidents to the police so that such incidents can be reduced and eliminated. “We are also considering deploying woman cops to attend the helpline calls to ensure that callers don’t face any inconvenience while registering their complaints,” he said.
Women usually avoid registering complaints and FIR against their ‘tormentors’. However, with police service available just by dialing helpline number, we hope women would come forward and lodge their complaints.
Assuring instant action on the complaints received through the helpline, he said special squads would be formed and they would provide quick and prompt service to the affected women.
Asked whether the helpline would be available for women in Srinagar only, the police officer said it could be availed of by women from any part of the state.
“The complaints received from outside Srinagar would be forwarded to respective district police officials for further action”.
Kashmir, according to police statistics, has witnessed a surge in crimes against women in the past few years. (Agencies)
