Clashes Continue in Kupwara on Day 2

KUPWARA; Fresh clashes erupted in north Kashmir’s Kupwara town Wednesday against the killing of seven persons by Army and police.

Clashes erupted in Kupwara town where police resorted to lobbing teargas shells to disperse the protestors. The clashes were going on till last fresh came in.

Protests had broken out in the village on the Wednesday with locals claiming that the slain men killed by Army were woodcutters who were killed in a staged gun battle by the forces.

NN Joshi, a Srinagar based defence spokeperson said the slain men were Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives killed in an encounter with a unit of Army and Kashmir police’s Special Operations Group near Dardpora village in Lolab Valley on Monday.

On Wednesday, clashes had broken out in the town and, in the ensuing protests, four media men were among the 15 injured which included cops and civilians.

One civilian was shot in the leg with a firearm and he was referred to a hospital where his condition is reported to be stable.

Reports said shops and business establishments across the district were closed on Wednesday while traffic remained off the roads. Hurriyat leaders have called for a strike on February.
