Rains Wreak Havoc across Kashmir: Srinagar flooded, SMC Sleeping

SRINAGAR; Kashmir Valley was cut off from the rest of the world as incessant rains triggered landslides on Srinagar-Jammu and Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway which remained closed for vehicular traffic on Monday.

Two days of incessant torrential rains wreaked havoc in Srinagar city where waterlogging was reported from various areas including the city centre Lal Chowk. Vehicles had to wade through a deluge of rainwater while pedestrians were left at the mercy of God to find way towards their destinations.

Heavy rains also triggered power blackouts in various parts of Kashmir Valley with people coming out on the streets to protest the shortage of electricity. Reports said agitated people blocked roads in various parts of Kashmir Valley, causing inconvenience to office-goers and students.

The Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed after it was hit by landslides in many places. The Beacon authorities were pressed into service to restore the traffic. However, the clearance operation was hit by bad weather.

The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service also remained closed on its ninth anniversary due to continuous rains since Sunday evening.

Higher reaches in Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg and Pahalgam received fresh snowfall while rains lashed the plains, bringing down temperatures across the Valley.

The rains have also delayed the spraying of the first pesticide which has become a cause of concern for farmers across the state.
