Prosecution asked to adduce evidence against Dr Qasim

SRINAGAR: 27, Aug 2012: Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar has asked the prosecution to adduce evidence against the illegally detained Hurriyet leader, Dr Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo, in a fake case registered against him. Advocate Urfi, the counsel for Dr Qasim, told media men in Srinagar that the court had once again granted an opportunity to the prosecution to produce evidence till second week of September. “The case pertains to a police allegation levelled against Dr Qasim that he raised funds for Hurriyet Conference on January 19, 2002. My client says that at that time he was lodged in Srinagar Central Jail under the black law, Public Safety Act (PSA),” she said. Pertinently, Dr Qasim was first arrested in 1993 under the PSA. However, after 6 years of imprisonment, a TADA court acquitted him of all the charges. Police later rearrested him at the New Delhi airport in 2002 when he wasreturning after attending a Conference on Kashmir in London. In 2003 he was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with a fake murder case registeredagainst him in 1992. Later, Dr Qasim hadfiled a petition praying that he was entitled for a review of his sentence. The High Court later asked the puppet administration on May 23, 2008, to constitute a review board to consider his release. Following a meeting, the review board had recommended his premature release. However, the puppet regimehad rejected the review board recommendation and he is still in jail.
