Sarpanchs, Panchs get threats in Shopian

SHOPIAN; 11Aug 2012: Pamphlets warning Sarpanchs and the Panchs of dire consequences in case they do not resign within a week are making rounds in several villages of this South Kashmir district.
The hand written posters, bearing stamp of little known outfit Al-Qaeda Mujahideen, order the Panchayat members to resign within a week and apologize publicly in mosques during the Friday congregational prayers or else face dire consequences.
The posters have been spotted in Pehlipora, Trenz, Turkiwangam, Mool Chitragam and its adjacent villages.
“The Panchayat members should immediately resign and also make it sure that their resignations appear in the local newspapers. They should also carry along the copies of the newspapers as we can visit any time to see the copies,” read the posters. It further read that the Panchayat system is not in accordance with the Islamic jurisprudence and hence not applicable in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The diktat also warned the women and girls of the town to wear Hijabs and abstain from wearing provocative dresses failing which they have to face acid attacks from the Al-Qaeda Mujahideen.
“This land belongs to Allah and we will make sure that nothing against His will happens here,” said the pamphlet.
Police, however, maintained that since the posters were hand written, their veracity was yet to be established.
“We are investigating the matter and hopefully will be able to get to its bottom,” a senior police official told
The posters asking the Panchayat members to resign had appeared in Pulwama and Shopian districts earlier also, however police has every time played down the issue terming it the handiwork of miscreants.
