5 yrs on, Sopore fruit mandi remains under CRPF occupation

BARAMULLA: 22, Aug 2013: In 2008, CRPF set up a camp in the buildings of the Planning and Marketing of the Horticulture Department in the compound of the fruit mandi, in the backdrop of mass uprising across the Valley that saw millions of people holding street protests against the Indian rule.

The troopers of CRPF’s 176 battalion occupied over 60 kanal of land even as the government had initially termed the setting up of the camp as a temporary engagement.

However, five years down the line, CRPF continues to occupy the land and the building causing inconvenience to the traders besides hitting their business.

“Apart from the land the troopers have also occupied eight buildings of the Horticulture Department. The fruit mandi has been turned into a garrison by the troopers with barricades and spools of razor wire. We’re suffering,” president, Fruit Mandi Sopore, Fayaz Ahmad Malik told
