3 Security Personnel;, 2 Insurgents Killed in Kupwara Gunfight
KUPWARA; Two cops of Jammu and Kashmir Police, an Army officer, and two suspected foreign insurgents were killed, while four cops were injured in an overnight gunbattle in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.
The slain army officer has been identified as Naib Subedar Kankanwadi of 19 Maratha Light Infantry while as the dead cops were identified as Assistant Sub Inspector Riyaz Ahmed of Special Operations Group of the Handwara District Police and the identity of the second slain cop is yet to be confirmed.
The encounter broke out at village Zunrishi in Kralpora area, last evening when a joint party of police and Army launched a search operation, a senior police officer told.
He said the house where the insurgents had taken shelter was destroyed in the overnight gunbattle that ended this afternoon.
Bodies of both the insurgents and two policemen, who were part of the search party which stormed, were recovered from the debris of the building this afternoon, the officer said.
He said an army trooper and four policemen were also injured in the encounter. hey were evacuated and rushed to 168 Military Hospital at Drugmulla. The condition of the two policeman including an ASI is stated to be 'critical'.
The officer said the identity and group affiliation of the slain insurgents could not be ascertained immediately but they are believed to be foreigners.
